Best Restaurants in Hiroshima

Hiroshima has a good reputation for cuisine. Many consider Hiroshima the “home of okonomiyaki,” and it boasts more okonomiyaki restaurants per capita than anywhere else in Japan. Seafood restaurants are also in abundance in the city, and you can find a diverse array of international eateries, too, ensuring that there’s something for everyone.

Here are some of the best places in Hiroshima for a spot of dinner.

Japanese restaurants

Hassei

This okonomiyaki restaurant has gained a reputation both locally and internationally. Located down a side street in the center close to the Peace Memorial Park, Hassei offers excellent service, a wide selection of delicious okonomiyaki including veggie and gluten-free options, plus an English menu making it popular with many expats. Most dishes are reasonably priced, between 600-1,300 yen.

Guttsuri-An

Guttsuri-An offers one of the best seafood experiences in Hiroshima. This quaint family-run restaurant is slightly off the beaten track (about a 15-20 minute ride from the station), but it’s a perfect mix of fantastic food and friendly service. There is an English-speaking staff, and dishes include shrimp tempura, octopus with garlic, and butter oysters served with a side of sashimi. Customers can also cook their own seafood in BBQ pits.

Nagataya

Another okonomiyaki restaurant close to Peace Park, Nagataya, is a popular eatery and often has queues outside at busy times. It has ample space inside where you can order the house special of pork, squid, and shrimp with soba or udon noodles topped with green onions and an egg. Teppanyaki dishes are also on the menu, including buttered oysters with lemon and green onions.

International restaurants

Roopali

Roopali serves a pleasingly authentic Indian dining experience with a wide range of dishes to suit all palates. Prices are reasonable, and you can opt for a set menu while the portion sizes are generous. The size of the various selection of naan bread is famously huge. The restaurant is easy to find too with it being very close to the station.

Basque

As the name might give away, Basque is a Spanish restaurant in Hiroshima that has quite an upmarket feel and superb authentic Iberian food. While the interior is cozy, you can choose from various meals, including paella, seafood specialties, and tortillas. There is also a nice selection of wine to complement the food.

Address: 1-3-14 Kokutaiji-cho, Naka Ward.

Parco della Pace

This Italian restaurant in central Hiroshima serves up some of the best pizza outside of Italy. The staff is super-friendly, and there are decent vegetarian and vegan options, including cheese-free pizzas. Drinks include Japanese wine and a range of international beers, while dessert treats include chocolate cake.
