SCMAGLEV and Railway Park Nagoya

SCMAGLEV-and-Railway-Park-NThe SCMaglev and Railway Park is a railway and train museum owned by the  Central Japan Railway Company in Nagoya, Japan.  The museum is a new edition to the list of things to do in Nagoya, having opened in March of 2011. The museum features nearly 40 full-size railway vehicles, in addition to a single bus exhibit, several train cab simulators, and a number of railway model dioramas.

This museum introduces the “advances in high speed railway” through rolling stock displays; including the next-generation superconducting Maglev Train due to begin operations in a decade or so.  In addition to displays on trains to come, you will find displays and exhibitions on the history of rail travel and trains, and about over time.

Adults and children alike will enjoy learning about how railway has impacted our society, economy, culture and lifestyle, and about trains generally via “rolling stock displays,” models, and even train simulators that allow you to drive a train!

The experience begins with the first thing visitors are treated to upon entry; actual rolling stock versions of award winning trains including an elderly steam engine, shinkansen (bullet train), and the futuristic vision of a maglev train prototype.  These massive engineering feats are impressive, and the opportunity to get so close to them is incredibly interesting!

Shibuya Cona Standing Pizzeria and Wine Bar

cona_shibuya_pizza TokyoWatching a show called “World business Satellite ワールドビジネスサテライト” the other night and it mentioned a “One coin pizza” chain restaurant in Shibuya!  Cona Standing Pizzeria offers a good pizza for “one coin.” That is correct,  A pizza for 500 yen in exactly where you might expect to want such a thing, but expect not to find it;Shibuya.  I ran down to check it out, and it was pretty good.

Cona is a stylish, yet casual wine bar / pizzeria featuring 80 varieties of wine; all available for about 2500 yen from their glass cellar.  If you are having trouble deciding you can ask the staff for a recommendation; they are quite helpful and even a bit knowledgeable on the topic.

As a non-drinker, I am far more interested in the selection of pizzas, and they do not disappoint.  They offer thin-crust with a variety of styles and toppings to choose from, including garlic and chorizo, bacon and asparagus, prosciutto and soft-boiled eggs.  There are easily 30 types of pizza on the menu for 500 yen each.  Despite the low price tag, you can try a variety of surprisingly gourmet sounding titles.

  • Mexican Pizza , which is served with lots of Jalapenos!
  • Gorgonzola Pizza , served with a side of honey!
  • Garlic Chorizo Pizza
  • Anchovy and Cream Cheese Pizza
  • Carbonara Pizza
  • Various Desert Pizza

The wine bar/pizzeria itself is quite small, and as mentioned earlier is standing room only.  Drinks are half price during happy hour (2pm – 6pm). There is no charge before 6pm, but after its Y300.
