Are you raring to get into the water in Hiroshima and experience some fun activities? The good news is this Japanese city has plenty of waterways and facilities offering everything from a nice relaxing day out to a white-knuckle, thrill-seeking extravaganza. Here’s a selection of sports and activities to try out.
Fancy canoeing around Hiroshima Bay? Paddle Park has been running kayaking activities here since 1996. You can choose a full-day or half-day excursion that takes you to Miyajima Island or even just a one-hour paddle around the bay. The full-day experience takes you under the legendary tori gate. Costs for a full-day 8-hour session are 12,000 yen (children 9,000 yen). This includes instruction and basic equipment.

SUP is becoming increasingly popular with water sports enthusiasts in Japan. Participants stand on a board that resembles a surfboard and paddle themselves using a single oar. This is another activity that you can try from Hiroshima Bay. SUP Miyajima runs full-day and half-day activities, including full instruction and wetsuit equipment hire. The full-day experience lasts 4-5 hours, incorporating a beach picnic and sightseeing on Miyajima Island (cost 10,000 yen). The half-day option is 2-3 hours and takes in the Torii Gate and Itsukushima Shrine (costs 7,000 yen).

For some serious underwater fun and a chance to view some of Hiroshima’s spectacular coastal scenery, why not give scuba diving a go? This is an opportunity to learn a new skill as well as explore what exists down on the sea bed. Sea Loop offers everything from beginner sessions to specialty courses for experienced divers at various locations across Hiroshima. You can take lessons to get a license and then join one of the local diving tours! Fees start at 77,000 yen for a beginner’s course, which includes equipment rental fees.
