If you’re looking for an adrenaline-fueled activity to get the blood pumping, you might find that paintballing is the sport for you. From amateur enthusiasts to professional players, paintballing provides an exciting opportunity to experience a simulated combat scenario while promoting teamwork, strategic thinking, and physical fitness.
It has become extremely popular in the United States and the United Kingdom, with a dubious reputation for bachelor party boisterousness and macho business bonding sessions. In Japan, however, paintballing has found a unique niche in Japan’s recreational scene that is much more appealing to the first-time participant.
While growing in popularity, paintballing suffers in the shadow of Airsoft, and play fields are few and far between. Fortunately, just an hour from Nagoya is Guts Paintball Field Kakamigahara, a great place to start your paintball adventure.
When you think about paintball, alpha bloke types crawling through cold and wet forests may spring to mind, but aside from the name, Guts is a far cry from that. For a start, it is an indoor facility available all year round. Rather than crawling through the wet mud, exposed to the elements, it is held on astroturf, with giant inflatables acting as shelter from the hail of pellets.
Now, if you think this doesn’t compare closely enough to actual combat for your tastes, Guts probably isn’t the place for you. But, if you are looking to try it for the first time, or you are an experienced ‘baller but want to get away from the macho posturing, you should get involved.
That is not to say that Guts isn’t still about the excitement and adrenaline coursing through the veins associated with paintballing. The aim of the game is still to take out your opponents, catch the flag, beat their buzzer, and not get shot because those balls hurt! Matches last up to five minutes at a time, which means those of you who do not necessarily have the endurance can rest and take breaks, while others can go again and again, competing to the end!
There are three slots per day in which you can take part: mornings from 9:30-13:30; afternoons from 13:30-17:30; and evenings from 18:30-22:30, costing 3,500 JPY per person. In addition, paintball guns (called markers) cost 1,000 JPY to rent, and 500 pellets will set you back 2,000 JPY. Of course, if you already have your own marker and pellets, these are acceptable. However, they must meet strict regulatory requirements, so please check with the store in advance.
Furthermore, even though Guts takes great care to put all safety elements in place, it should be remembered that paintballing is a dangerous sport (and Brits of a certain age will recall what happened to poor PJ on Byker Grove). As such, protection must be worn. Wearing a face mask and goggles is mandatory – special paintballing goggles only, not ski or snowboard goggles – and these are available for rent for 500 JPY.
This means that it can add up to a pricey day out – particularly if you get overly trigger-happy – but it is a fun one that can be enjoyed by all and is accessible to almost everyone. So, what are you waiting for? Leave that macho attitude by the door, and lock and load!
