Great Places to See a Sunset in Kansai

Sunsets can provide the perfect backdrop to a romantic evening or be a fitting endpoint for a nice walk. With many high vantage points across the region as well as great natural scenery, Kansai boasts several ideal spots to watch the sun go down in the evening. If you fancy capping off your day with a few moments of natural beauty, here are a few places you can go.

Yuhigaura Kaigan

This beach setting on the shores of Kyoto is perfect for a sunset stroll, no matter what the season. In summer you can see the sun silhouetted against the beach rocks as it disappears, while in the spring and winter it drops slowly behind the mountain backdrop. It is also worth taking a walk along the Yuhi No Michi (Sunset Road) that runs along the beach. There is plenty of seating along the way too if you want to just sit and take in the wonder.

Umeda Sky Building

One of the tallest structures in Osaka, this 40-story building stands at 173 meters tall. The building has a rooftop garden observatory on the top floor that overlooks the city and provides a great vantage point for a sunset view. It is located about 10 minutes by walk from Osaka station and entry costs around 1,000 yen. The last admission is 10:00 p.m., so there is plenty of time to get in and enjoy the evening skyline.

Mount Maya

One of the highest peaks in the Rokko mountain range, Mount Maya stands at almost 700 meters and is one of the best places in Kobe to see a sunset. The peak can be reached by the Maya Ropeway, which travels to the summit until 8:50 p.m. on most days. Alternatively, you can walk to the summit. From the top, you can soak in the view of the surrounding Osaka Bay that lights up beautifully once the night sky comes out. There is also the option to stay at the nearby Hotel de Maya, which is located 10 minutes from the mountaintop.

Shima-Shimmei Station

This rail station in eastern Mie Prefecture has a nearby observation area overlooking Kashikojima Island. This point has provided photographers with many opportunities to capture the perfect Japanese sunset picture, such as when the region hosted a G7 summit in 2016.

Keino Matsubara Beach

This spot in Minami Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture, has been voted one of the 100 best places to view the sunset in Japan. Located around an hour away from Sannomiya station, this peaceful setting offers glorious red sky views and is nicknamed the Proposal Highway because, well, you can probably guess. If you visit in the summer season of July/August, you can also enjoy a swim in the sea.

Shogunzuka Viewpoint

This wooden viewing platform on Mt. Daimonji was built in 2015 and is a popular spot for tourists who want to see fantastic views across Kyoto city. In the summer, it’s a splendid location to travel to if you want to enjoy the sights of the sun slowly setting on Japan. It’s accessible by foot, or you can make the journey by train (to Keage station) or bus. There is also a Buddhist prayer hall and a small garden situated on site.
