Kumamoto’s Farmland: Aso Milk Factory

In the north of Aso city is the Aso Milk Factory, where you can experience the delicious taste of locally produced dairy, pick delicious fruit, and take a pleasant stroll through a lovely flower garden. The Aso Milk Factory is a fun little stop for those making a day trip to Aso city.

How to Get There

It is best to go by car to Aso Milk Factory as public transportation can take upwards of 2 hours depending on the time of day.

The Milk Factory

Of course, the main attraction of Aso Milk Factory is the selection of excellent dairy products made from locally sourced milk. The factory produces cheese, sweets, milk, drinkable yogurt, fresh every day! The shop has everything lined up as you enter and has a wide variety of toys for children (The Siku toy brand of John Deere tractor is sure to be a big hit for anyone with small children).

Your author was most interested in the fact that cheese can be purchased by having it sliced from the block as fresh as it can get!

All of the goods here can be purchased as souvenirs and can serve as great omiyage for everyone after your trip.

The shop is open all year from 9:30 to 18:00.

The Cafe and Restaurant

While the shop has a great selection, many people may find it hard to be around all that delicious food and not want to eat. Fortunately, Aso Milk Factory has both a cafe and a restaurant.

The cafe has the usual fresh and delicious ice creams, gelatos, and coffees, but the main draw is their ice cream and baumkuchen combination. This sweet treat uses freshly made ice cream and soft baumkuchen to make a delicious treat for any fan of sweets.

Not to be outdone, the restaurant features an all-out display of the many ways visitors can use dairy products in cooking. Customers will have a hard time choosing from fresh cheese on pasta, gooey melted cheese on pizza, or even salads topped with yogurt made that morning!

The cafe is open all year from 9:30 to 18:00.

The restaurant is open from 11:00 to 15:00.

Strawberry Picking

Strawberries go great with condensed milk, on top of cakes, with ice cream, or…well, strawberries rock with just about any kind of dairy. You can reserve a timeslot at the Aso Milk Factory to go strawberry picking to your heart’s content.

Prices vary by season, and it’s first-come, first-served so be sure to visit the website to ensure all the details before going.

Strawberry picking is from 9:30 to 17:00, but reception closes from 16:00.

The Rose Garden

The rose garden is a fun reason to stick around after filling up on fruits and dairy. There are 750 types of about 4,000 roses in the garden. The roses enter full bloom between April and June, so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery and take some lovely photos.

The roses will have developed a more intense aroma for those who visit in autumn than the spring roses. Either way, you can get the perfect backdrop for an excellent post on social media. The Aso Milk Factory YouTube channel has a garden video if you want to see a preview.

The rose garden is open from 9:30 to 17:00. However, the rose dome is available only until 16:30 and is closed between December 1st and the middle of April.
