Your Summer Must-Eats

Summers in Nagoya are hot. Hot and humid. Humid and miserable. Miserable an…you know what, let’s stop there.

While the summer heat often is at the forefront of everyone’s mind, there are some excellent food choices out there for residents that are worth braving the heat and humidity. Furthermore, residents originally from North America or Europe may be delighted to hear that there are excellent, authentic Asian cuisines available here that would be a bit harder to get ahold of back home. Let’s dive in and see our choices!

Sri Lankan – Meals&Rotti by PAHANA

This restaurant serves the types of meals one would expect at a Sri Lankan restaurant, but they also are known for having a great selection of organic choices. With a robust menu, just about any fan of Sri Lankan food should walk away quite happy with their meal. Be aware that visiting by car would require using local coin parking as the store itself does not have a parking lot.

Sri Lankan – Ceylon Cafe and Bar

Am I being unfair by including a second Sri Lankan option? No, I would argue it’s unfair to have this many delicious options. Situated in Osu, this choice lends itself nicely to a dinner after spending a day out in Nagoya’s trendy shopping area. I am a personal fan of the chicken devel as it had a lovely spicy kick and that flavor and texture combination where your mouth is pretty sure your stomach could eat like 4 or 5 more without complaint. There are also beef, pork, lamb, fish and shrimp options if you want a different meat with your spice.

Thai – Higashizakura Pakchi

Sporting a variety of classic Thai dishes, visitors can choose whether to go for the savory side or the spicy side when deciding on a meal. From memory, the spice was a bit stronger than what I had expected of a restaurant primarily catering to Japanese denizens, but this is hardly a complaint. The only downside is that your author is genetically disposed to having coriander (the “pakchi” mentioned in the restaurant’s name) taste like soap, so I have to forego it, but family members have had it piled on with frequent mentions of oishii (delicious) filling the air as we ate.

Indonesian – Warungruparupa

Serving as both a restaurant and as a halal market, this store in Obu city has been approved as “authentic and delicious” by Indonesian acquaintances and has a reputation for having a very friendly owner. However, as with all great local spots, online information is sparse so you may just want to head over and dive in rather than hunting for information online.

Korean – Backje

This restaurant between Imaike and Ikeshita stations is an absolute delight for those yearning to have authentic Korean food while in Nagoya. The staff are veterans at creating all sorts of great dishes like tteokbokki or dakgalbi that will most certainly scratch your Korean food itch. Spice levels reminded me of restaurants I had visited while in Korea and the taste gave me flashback as well. Keep in mind that going by car can be dicey as they have limited parking spaces available.

As always, try to check the restaurant’s business days and times before going to avoid disappointment. While I am a fan of spice, there are plenty of options at each of these restauarants for those who do not enjoy spiciness.
