Top Ideas for Valentine’s Day in Kansai

You’re in luck if you are in Kansai over Valentine’s Day. The region may not be known for being among the most romantic destinations globally, but there are definitely some great spots for a unique date.

1. Take a Spa Day at an Onsen Resort

Throughout Kansai, there are onsen, ranging from simple public baths to luxurious spas. For Valentine’s Day, it’s worth purchasing a day ticket or booking a stay at a hotel where you’ll have your own private hot spring bath.

2. Have a Classic Date at Kaiyukan

A top place for dates in Osaka for decades has been Kaiyukan, the largest aquarium in the world. As soon as you enter, you’ll see why. The setting is magical, and the lighting is romantic. Since it’s open until late, it’s a great way to start a Valentine’s Day evening. Afterward, you could explore Tempozan Harbor Village — perhaps take a ride on the Ferris wheel or a cruise around the harbor.

3. View the Osaka Skyline from Abeno Harukas

With Tokyo Sky Tree classified as a tower, Abeno Harukas is technically the tallest building in the country. Its observation platform is 300 meters high and a great place to go for a panoramic view of the Osaka skyline and port. Plus, Kintetsu Department Store is below with its famous Valentine’s Day Chocolate Collection — don’t forget to grab a box of chocolates before you go up to the platform.

4. Enjoy the Views from the Sagano Romantic Train

Sagano Romantic Train runs along a 19th-century railway in western Kyoto. You’ll pass through the scenic countryside, including forests, mountains, and the Hozugawa River gorge. Depending on how much time you have, there are several routes to choose from. One option is to disembark at Kameoka Torokko Station and take the two-hour river cruise back to Saga Torokko Station, from which you can easily reach Kyoto Station.

5. Head to the Romantic Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

Another option for an outdoor date in Kyoto is the towering bamboo grove of Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. If you want to spend more time outdoors, continue your walk to Okochi Sanso Garden. It’s one of the most beautiful gardens in all of Kyoto. Plus, entry includes tea and a cake at the end of your walk to complete your date.

6. Buy Gifts at Grand Front

If you’re the kind of couple who prefers to pick out gifts together to avoid surprises, there’s no better destination for a date than Grand Front in Osaka. The commercial complex is packed with stores to suit all tastes, from fashion to tech. In addition, two whole floors are dedicated to the food court with a wide variety of restaurants, and there’s a rooftop garden on top of the North Tower where you can end the evening with a cocktail.

Whatever kind of Valentine’s Day you want — traditional or modern, a stroll in the park or drinks in the city — it’s possible in Kansai. Any of the above ideas are sure to lead to a date to remember.
