Hamburger Restaurants in Nagoya

Though Nagoya has a plethora of great restaurants with amazing teppanyaki, tebasaki, ramen and sushi, sometimes you just want good old home comfort food, and quite often that means burgers. Now, there was a time when you couldn’t turn a page in the local Nagoya press without coming across another article about a burger joint. However, since NAGMAG (for those of you who remember it) closed its pages for the last time a couple of years ago, we felt like it was time for a bit of an update.

Layer’s Burgers

As you may already know, this blog is supported by The H&R Group, and Layer’s is very close to that office; if you are in the neighborhood, drop by! Great burgers, but the portions are a bit small.

The avocado burger is highly recommended, and if you are worried about the portion, order extra fries or double up the patty. They also have bottles of Kami Katz beer from Tokushima, which is organic and eco-friendly in more ways you can imagine

The Corner Bar and Saloon

The Corner near Endouji was for a long time the absolute best burger bar in Nagoya. Part Jazz bar, part saloon, and a wide range of International beers, it was a big favorite of the expat community. Therefore, it is a bit of a shame that they now only open at lunch, though that doesn’t stop it being mad busy.

Fortunately, there is a second store in Global Gate that opens until 8pm, with the same phenomenal burgers – actually it’s possible that they are now even better – and a different specialty each month. It’s just a shame that it’s a bit more of a pain in the backside to get to… but probably worth it for the onion rings alone.

Midtown BBQ

By far the best BBQ place in Nagoya (in Japan?), of course Midtown BBQ does excellent burgers, and if you’ve not been there before, what’s keeping you? Flame-grilled and 100% beef, these burgers are succulent and substantial in equal measures.

There is a wide selection, with the Little Pig – topped with pulled pork – a huge favourite. Speaking of huge, if you can stomach it and want a challenge, why not give the Great Outdoors a try? Four patties, four cheese, artery-clogging goodness!

The Risco

With an Aussie beef base, The Risco adds wagyu Hida beef fat and sweet Hida pork to create a unique and slightly sweet blend, while the buns are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

The shop itself is really cool, with a rock and roll/rockabilly sensibility and a superb soundtrack. Lovers of the picante will dig The Mexican, with its jalapeño peppers, but if you want something a bit out of the ordinary, The Japan, with shiso and lotus root, is certainly unusual.

Handsome Burger

If you want nominative determinism in a burger, then Handsome Burger is the place for you, because these burgers look great. Not only that, but they taste even better.

After being blown away by the burgers in San Francisco, the owner quit his job and trained as a burger chef in the US. The result is this authentic burger bar in the Fushimi Underground Mall, and at a basic ¥600, it’s a price you can’t beat.

Japan Craft Beer&Wine Grillman

Otherwise known as Grillman Burgers, this place focuses on beer and meat; not necessarily in that order.   The food is good, and the atmosphere is pleasant.  Well worth a visit if you hunger for hops and sizzling meat!

What does nominative determinism mean???

Maybe I should have asked if it means that everyone who goes to Handsome Burger looks like a hamburger?

Or maybe the people who work at Handsome Burger are handsome, or burgers, but not both.
